The subject of Päivi Alajuntti’s work, painted using egg tempera on gauze, is lichen, which is ubiguitous in Finnish nature. Lichen is viable and adaptable to different climatic conditions, while at the same time being susceptile to damage, pollution and climate change. Alajuntti has used relational harmonies borrowed from music to determine the number and size of her exhibited paintings, and the distances between them when hung.
